The future of life on Earth is the future of cities, and the future of cities is inextricably linked to the future of engineering and design.
New ideas, innovations and technologies will be crucial to how well we are able to manage the challenges of population growth, urbanization, ageing demographics and climate change as the century progresses.
Anyone with a professional interest in the built environment — or who is simply interested in these incredibly exciting places called cities — needs to understand what’s coming up. But more than this, they need to understand how to actually apply these ideas to make a difference on their own projects and in their own localities.
That’s what we’re trying to do with this magazine. “The art and science of the possible” is one way to describe what we do as engineers — so that’s what we’ve called it.
